Houston Refinery Accidents

There are 150 operable refineries in the United States as reported by the National Petrochemical and Refiners Association. This industry posted revenue in 2009 as approximately $425.2 billion.

Without question, refinery work is one of the most dangerous occupations in the United States. With media attention on the United States’ dependence on foreign oil, the demand for domestic oil increases. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) focused its attention on refineries in March 2007 following the Chemical Safety and Hazard Investigation Board’s (CSB) report on a BP accident in Texas City, TX.

A Deceptive Threat

The threat of explosion, serious burns, falls, exposure to toxic chemicals, and wrongful deaths are high. The state of Texas has more oil refineries than anywhere else in the United States. According to OSHA, between the years 1992 and 2007 there were only 36 fatal refinery accidents that resulted in 52 deaths and 250 injuries.

While the numbers look low, it must be stated that these figures are deceiving. Oil refineries hire contractors to perform higher risk activities. When accidents do occur, contractors are not included in refinery injury data.

Injuries sustained from refinery accidents often require lengthy recovery periods, which result in lost income and mounting medical expenses.

Who is at Risk?

Oil refinery workers are not the only ones at risk when accidents occur. In the event of a refinery explosion, the residents in neighboring communities are at great risk to exposure of toxic chemicals. The 2008 explosion in Big Spring, TX resulted in closed schools, a local college, and Interstate Highway 20.

If you or a loved one have suffered an injury as a result of a refinery accident because of work in the refinery or due to your proximity to the refinery where an accident has occurred, it is imperative that you seek legal counsel that can help you receive the compensation to which you are entitled.

Experienced attorneys will perform the necessary research and investigate all the circumstances surrounding an accident. Your legal representation must be well-versed in federal and state regulations that govern safe-handling at refineries and possess in-depth knowledge of the CSB and OSHA guidelines.
