The U.S. Census Bureau estimates 36.2 million people live within an Atlantic hurricane path. This area includes coastal portions of North Carolina to Texas where approximately 12% of the U.S. population lives.

The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) states there are on average 10 tropical storms that develop over the Atlantic Ocean, Caribbean Sea, and Gulf of Mexico each year. Of these 10 storms, 6 will become a hurricane and only 5 will strike the United States. Two of those 5 will be a major hurricane, registering 3 or higher on the Saffit-Simpson Scale with winds from 111-130 miles per hour—the highest register on the scale being 5.

What Do You Do?

The devastation caused by a hurricane of this magnitude can include broken windows and doors caused by flying debris thereby permitting rain to enter structures causing even greater damage. Trees and power lines can fall crushing buildings, cutting power, and threatening lives on the ground. Roads and bridges are often washed out by rising water. Weak homes and buildings can collapse. This devastation is not limited to coastal areas; the effects of a hurricane can extend hundreds of miles inland away from the coast.

In the event that a hurricane causes damage to your property, you should:

  • Take photos or vide of damaged areas.
  • Make repairs to prevent damage from worsening without causing further damage.
  • Immediately notify your insurance provider.
  • Contact an experienced law firm to represent you.

Talk With a Lawyer

Rebuilding your home or business is a time consuming and costly process following a hurricane. If loved ones are lost, the suffering and time required to heal is prolonged. When hurricane claims are denied, delayed, or underpaid it is advisable that legal counsel is sought that can work with your insurance provider to ensure you receive the compensation that you deserve to help you overcome such devastation.
